Benign (noncancerous) condition causing changes in breast tissue. Development of excess fibrous tissue, hyperplasia (overgrowth) of the epithelial lining of the mammary ducts, cyst formation. Changes are due to breast tissue with an increased responsiveness to circulating estrogen and progesterone: not associated with increased risk of breast cancer. Begins around age 20, but age 35-50 most commonly affected. No children, premenstrual abnormalities, hx of spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), early menarge (period before age 12), late menopause (after 55), no contraceptive use. One or more palpable round, well-delineated (defined borders), freely movable lumps. Nipple discharge may be present that is milky, watery-milky, yellow, or green. Can be aspirated or surgically removed if become problematic. Transient, non-inflammatory enlargement of one or both breasts. Caused by an imbalance between androgen and estrogen in the plasma or breast itself. Can also accompany other health problems: may be a medication side effect- could try other medication. Anti-estrogen drugs clomid, tamoxifen (can also be used for cancer)
