Patho: nosebleed that originates in anterior or posterior septum. Causes: trauma, chronic infection, local irritation (oxygen), nose sprays, bleeding time issues, Nsaids, excessive blowing of nose, htn, chronic allergies. Tx: give vasoconstrictors, pack with nasal tampon (contain lidocaine, epinephrine, cocaine), cauterize with silver nitrate. Nursing care: sitting position, lean slightly forward, facial ice to slow bleeding, nasal pressure- pinch lower half of nose for 10-15 minutes, monitor respiratory status if nasal tampon, monitor for s&s of infection, Causes: exposure to allergens, pollen, environmental trigger. Tx: allergy shots, avoid pollen or trigger, antihistamines, nasal sprays, corticosteroids, leukotriene. S&s: inflammation of nose, congestion, sneezing, thin/liquidy discharge, watery itchy eyes, snoring inhibitors (claritin) Nursing care: give medications, teach about medications, antihistamines work to treat allergy symptoms. 2nd generation antihistamines are preferred but can cause tachycardia and palpitations. Virus can live on inanimate object for up to 3 days.
