NURS 371 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Fine-Needle Aspiration, Thyroid, Goitre
Document Summary
Nodules-palpable deformity of the thyroid gland, may be benign or cancerous. A goiter may cause the thyroid to become hyper (toxic) or hypo active, or cause no change at all. The leading cause of goiter is iodine deficiency. Manifestations: painless, palpable nodules in an enlarged thyroid. Diagnostics: ultrasound, then ct, mri or fine needle aspiration (fna, radioiodine uptake and thyroid scan to determine if hot or cold Treatment: depends on if toxic (causing hyperthyroidism) or cancerous. Hypothyroidism: deficiency of thyroid hormone, slow metabolic rate, occurrence: 1 in 50 women and 1 in 300 men in the us! Primary hypothyroidism: is caused by destruction of thyroid tissue or defective hormone synthesis. Secondary hypothyroidism: is caused by pituitary or hypothalamic dysfunction ((cid:315) tsh or trh) Etiology: iodine deficiency, atrophy of the gland, treatment for hyperthyroidism (thyroidectomy, drugs.
