Pt will be npo for 8-12 hours before refrain from smoking after midnight. Fluoroscopic exam of the colon using contrast medium (administered rectally, via enema) Pre-procedure: administer enemas until clear, and stool softeners. Diet evening before clear liquids, npo 8-12 hours. Tell cramping and urge to defecate may occur during exam, and pt may be placed in various positions on a tilt table. Post-procedure: give fluid/laxatives to assist in expelling barium.
