Review: assessment findings: subjective assessment (table 39-8, health history questions, physical exam, normal assessment findings (table 39-10, gerontologic considerations (table 39-5, common assessment abnormalities (table 39-11) Diagnostic testing: radiological studies, upper gi/barium swallow- x-ray study with fluoroscopy with contrast medium, used to dx structural abnormalities of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum pre-procedure: Teaching: pt will need to drink the barium (contrast) and assume various positions on x- ray table. Pt will be npo for 8-12 hours before refrain from smoking after midnight. Fluoroscopic exam of the colon using contrast medium (administered rectally, via enema) Pre-procedure: administer enemas until clear, and stool softeners. Diet evening before clear liquids, npo 8-12 hours. Tell cramping and urge to defecate may occur during exam, and pt may be placed in various positions on a tilt table. Post-procedure: give fluid/laxatives to assist in expelling barium.
