Woe’s Ciil Rights Moeet Reie
I. Overview
a. Began with few if any citizenship rights
b. Early focus on suffrage (right to vote)
i. Senaca Falls Convention 1848: voting was very controversial at this convention.
Ee aog oe ho et to oe’s ight oetio. Most of the fous
was on property rights, child custody rights, etc
ii. 14th aedet did’t appl to oe.
1. Court said that just because it guaranteed itizeship did’t ea the
get right to vote
iii. Split in approaches to securing suffrage (separate tactics and goals)
1. Less violent: attempt to win state vote, national amendment. Bi-
patisaship. Thei goal as to get states to appoe oe’s ight to
vote. Long term goal was national amendment, but immediate was
trying to target states.
2. More violent: protest toward national amendment. Goal was to get
attention to the movement.
a. Held a parade and Washington DC refused to give parade
protectionthis parade and the resulting attack and news
stories get attention.
b. Atiel apaiged agaist ee politiia that did’t suppot
oe’s suffage
c. They get managed to get several senators to not get re-elected
d. They picketed outside the white house: suddenly, the oe’s
suffrage movement was picketing the WW1 president. Using
banners that are saying bad things about Wilson. Called Wilson
a dictator basically in the middle of the war. These women were
arrested with false charges, and protested in jail. They refused
to eat, and were treated so poorly in jail that Wilson had to let
them out.
e. This change in public opinion was really what pushed 19th
amendment to pass. The non violent approach was going really
slow, but the coverage that had been generated due to the
violent approach, people started changing their minds.
II. What ee siiliaities etee oe’s ights oeet ad Afia aeias?
a. No defined citizenship rights for women, or blacks.
b. less access to education, less access to jobs were both problems that both of these
groups faced
