Limitations of learning from authority: we believe that authorities are always trustworthy, we trust authorities in an area outside their expertise, science. Limitations of learning from science: science makes predictions about general patterns. Not about specific cases or individuals: science assumes there is an objective truth, but not all questions fit this approach. Social scientific research: applies the scientific approach to knowledge to studying social phenomena, social = people, how people think, how people behave, how people interact. 5 characteristics of scientific research: scientific research is public. Public research is usually conducted by university professors, polling firms: the purpose is to predict, explain, understand, and control, the methods and findings are made public.
