Intro to sociology 1005- lecture 7- deviance, crime, and social control. Deviance- a violation of established contextual, culture, or social norms, whether folkways, mores, or codified law. Not so much the act, but the reactions to the act that makes something deviant. *deviance is a neutral term used to describe actions that people respond negatively to. It does not mean that we agree the act is bad or good by itself. Social control- the regulation and enforcement of norms: social order- an arrangement of practices and behaviors on which society"s members base their daily lives- underlying goal of social control. Conflict theory- looks to social and economic factors as the causes of crime and deviance: power elite- a small group of wealthy and influential people at the top of society who hold the power and resources. Crime statistics- come from a number of different sources in order to get a full picture of crime.
