Document Summary

Chapter outline1 and reading questions aristotle ( . Aristotle"s poetics is considered by many to be the first major works of literary theory because, unlike. Plato"s dialogues concerning literature, aristotle isolates literature (though he says there"s no existing name for this grouping of works of imaginative writings) as a distinct kind of representation worthy of distinct consideration. He announces this disciplinary distinction in the very first sentence of the treatise. Aristotle says it doesn"t just matter that an artist re-presents something real, but what he represents, and how and why he does it. In this and so many other ways, the comparison and contrast to plato"s theory of representation should remain foremost in your mind as you read. Aristotle gets rid of that low, third realm plato puts beneath the ideal realm and the material realm; artists get promoted to the level of the material realm and even more than that.
