Document Summary

Some absolute rules and non-absolute rules for writing, analysis, and quotation. Whether you are responding to a short question or an essay question, a number of basic principles for good critical writing apply. The following is a digest of some of the comments i find myself making on students" exams and essays over and over again (since 1990, when i started at this business). We will discuss each of these in the time leading up to your exam due date. Your essay should have a title, preferably a descriptive one. The titles of long, book-length prose, poetry, and non-fiction should be underlined or italicized (they signify the same thing). The titles of short prose works, essays, non-epic or dramatic poems should be put in quotation marks. You must spell the name of the author and work your essay analyzes for your essay to be credible.
