Culture is a system of symbols that allows us to represent/communication our experience. Language system of cultural knowledge used to generate and interpret speech. Speech behavior that produces meaningful vocal sounds: the distinction between language + speech is like that between culture + behavior language is part of culture, the system of knowledge that generates behaviors. Speech is the behavior generated and interpreted by language. Every language is composed of 3 subsystems for dealing with vocal symbols: phonology, grammar, semantics: 1. Phonology categories and rules for forming vocal symbols. Concerned not directly with meaning, but with formation and recognition of vocal sounds to which we assign meaning.
