Aggression is intentional behavior aimed at doing harm or causing pain to another person. Hostile aggression: aggression stemming from feelings of anger and aimed at inflicting pain. Instrumental aggression: aggression as a means to some goal other than causing pain. Males across cultures have been observed to show more aggression even at young ages. Evolutionary psychology seeks to identify genetic explanations for male aggression: Aggression is a natural behavioral response, but social circumstances and culture can exert strong influences over when and how it is expressed. Competition for resources can lead to increased aggression. Cultures that promote collectivist values are typically less aggressive societies than more individualistic cultures. Relational aggression: harming another person through the manipulation of relationships ex: rumors, shunning, etc. People learn social behavior through observation and imitation of others. Bobo doll experiment- children watch a model play with it.
