Social cognition: process in which people make sense of other people, themselves and social situations. How we thing about ourselves the situations we are in and the people are jus. Example: putting the rst ten number in alphabetical order. James behavior could be regarded positively or negatively. The words we were asked to memorize in the beginning were different for different groups in the class. Once group had works like stubborn, reckless, conceited, aloof. The second group had words like self con dent, adventurous, independent. People in the rst condition were more likely to classify james behaviors as undesirable and the second conditions classi ed his behavior as desirable. Mental structure used to organize knowledge around themes. In uence what we notice, think about and remember. Many schemes could be applied to each situation. Example: man named amadou diallo coming home from work. the police are looking for a serial rapist.
