First order- only one behavior of the system changes. Ex: john and mary are fighting, and to solve it they just completely stop talking to one another. No longer fighting, but also no longer talking. Ex: john dances next time they fight in an effort to break the pattern of anger and frustration, therefore the interaction changes. Taking a step back to calm yourself down and re-engage and calm down. Empathy- take a step back and wonder what this would be like for them. Balance of the need for togetherness and individuality in a relationship. The more autonomous ones intellect is from autonomic emotional forces. Triangle (think of bowen when you hear this) Emotional reactivity/fusion to emotional cutoff (in the shape of a plus) In a tension field, the two people predictably involve a third person to make a triangle. If it involves four or more people, the system becomes a series of interlocking triangles" - bowen.
