Document Summary
Sex: biological quality determined by chromosomes, hormones that govern development of internal and external sex organs. Until 8 weeks all embryos are anatomically similar. Does not explain: act, dress, talk etc. in ways appropriate for one"s biology: gender: culturally sanctioned expectations for m/f that are socially created and maintained. Gender roles: culturally imposed expectations for the behavior of those who are biologically m/f based on gender-typed qualities. Gender identity: extent to which we percieve of ourselves in gender typed ways. Tina brandon bio f --> m gender identity M --> raised (socialized) f --> reverted to male. Intersexed --> born with indistinguishable or m&f genitalia. Not always known at birth (internal) ---> infertile. 2015 malta 1st country to outlaw surgical intervention with out patients consent. Social learning theory: gender learned through reinforcement: gender appropriate behavior learned from modeling and imitating --> same sex others.
