Ireland is an island, but the province of northern ireland itself is very split politically. Protestants and catholics protestants tended to settle in the neastern part of ire, and has become why nire is so different. Recently, the % of prot has declined, while catholics have increased bc they have been emigrating less and less (and have more kids). Became the battleground for religious wars in europe. Very important battle between william of orange (prot) and james ii (cath) in 1690 still celebrated heavily every year, and has recently become a hotspot for violence. Penal law said catholics could not go to university, send children overseas, vote, own land, etc really bad bc most of the country"s cath. Wolfe tone had an uprising to fight against prots. Potato famine of 1840 million die, thousands emigrate to us. 1886 england pushes for ireland home rule (not autonomy), but fails and gets vetoed.
