Document Summary

Broad theme: democracy is complicated and even when a nation becomes a nation-state, there is no reason to believe it will become a democracy. Even when they become a democracy, hard to achieve liberal democracy. Wanted to prevent radical demands from workers. Motivation was appeasement, unlike in britain where it was for political party competition for votes. Without this, not many other sources for industrial wealth. Hard to pay because don"t have sources to pay that money and it was a lot of money. Took 90 years to pay (cid:617)0(cid:616)0 finally paid. Germany"s attempt to become liberal, parliamentary democracy like britain. Combination of economic problems and political problems. Vicious cycle: weimar republic wasn"t accepted by people difficult to get a clear mandate to govern couldn"t function. Nobody would support it because it couldn"t do anything. People more likely to look towards undemocratic solutions. Right wing: (cid:361)let"s go back to bismarck! (cid:362)
