France try to chanel their influence outside of france/europe: in africa. Italy want to become great power, so they had to expand and get territories outside of europe--in. Mercantilism believed that wealth is fixed (cannot be created nor destroyed). The only way to get wealthier is to take wealth from other countries. Economic prosperity does not require you to own your own colonies.
