Politics: power relations among people (or other social actors like classes, political parties), involves struggle over distribution of resources. Power: the ability of individuals or groups to achieve their aims or further their interests, even when others resist. Domination: the probability that a given command will be obeyed by a given groups of people/actors. Authority: the justifiable right to exercise power. This is power that is widely viewed as legitimate. Ex: 4 way stop or why there is differentiation in grades. Legitimate authority: (max weber) some forms of authority are widely viewed as justified or legitimate. Historically, there have essentially been three different bases upon which such claims to legitimacy have been made: traditional authority. Allegiance owed to the person and the office at the same times. Limited not by law, but by tradition. Allegiance owed to the office, not the person. Limited by laws that bind even the leader.
