Document Summary

Classic selection model ignores: human decision making can alter who applies and who gets hired, top-down is not what happens, predictor relationships with performance don"t need to be linear, nature of the job can change over time. Phantom effect: when you lose someone, you will choose someone who looks the most similar to that person: people very sensitive to losing things. Linear relationship: straight line relationship between two variables. Monotonic: consistently increasing (or decreasing) relationship where the slope varies over one or more regions, but never reverses. Asymptotic: special kind of monotone relationship where the relationship increases, but flattens out. Nonlinear: trend reverses over one or more regions. Dynamic criteria: performance is dynamic: nature of job changes, as job changes, expect some things to be more predictive earlier than later. Simple hiring model too simple: people make decisions, hiring decisions violate top-down, performance predictions not always linear, performance is dynamic. Ability: sample of a person"s current behavioral repertoire.
