[three types of validity: construct validity, extent to which the operational definition reflects theoretical meaning of the variable. If variable we"re measuring are we really measuring what we think we"re measuring. Internal validity: extent to which we can conclude that there is a causal relationship between variables. Extent to which we take appropriate precaution to our experiment so that we can result in appropriate conclusions: biggest threat, plausible alternative explanations, external validity, extent to which our results can be generalized. Experimental methods: non-experimental, observe or measure variables of interest, observe behavior as it naturally occurs. Indirectly look at results of behavior: observing and recording, experimental, involves direct manipulation and control of variables. We don"t merely observe variables observe one variable and look for effect on another variable. [nonexperimental method: correlational methods/research (measuring variables/wondering if there is a relationship between them), ex. Predictor criterion (or outcome variable): measuring predictor if we can measure criterion variable.
