Planets the size of earth exist in habitable region of the sun. Cows have 2 stomachs-- no microbes to help digest foods. We would not have beer, wine, cheese. Things would pile up on our planet. Mycoplasmas: lack cell walls, sterols in plasma membrane. Archaea: wall-less or walls made out of pseudomurein. Protoplasts and spheroplasts are susceptible to osmotic lysis. L forms are wall-less cells that swell into irregular shapes. Simple diffusion movement of a solute from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Facilitated diffusion: solute combines with a transporter protein in the membrane. Carboxysomes- ribulose 1,5- diphosphate carboxylase for co2 fixation. Discovered that by putting lenses at precise distances from each other the aberration from all but the first lens could be eliminated. Simple stain technique: stains the bacteria (ex: positively charged stains like crystal violet) Negative stain technique: stains the background, not the cells (negatively charged stains)
