Across the region, 40% of population became refugees and many drowned. But far (cid:289)ore died i(cid:290) the flood"s(cid:910) after(cid:289)ath a(cid:290)d the (cid:363)ater li(cid:290)gered for (cid:289)o(cid:290)ths, dikes were broken. Loss of crops, cropland and stored food led to widespread starvation.
