Document Summary

Quiz wednesday nothing from today is on quiz. -> need a new model --> molecular orbital theory - based on molecular symmetry. Symmetry operation: a movement made on an object that results in a configuration indistinguishable from the original configuration (ex: turning trigonal planar molecule 120 degrees) What happens when we have 2 more more axes of rotation in our molecule. Highest order axes = principle axis of rotation (aligned w/ z axis)and then goes down. There"s a hierarchy: looking for highest order (highest n value, passes through maximum # atoms, perpendicular to plane of molecule. Look for 1, if same, then look at 2etc. For cn rotation, if a specific type of atom lies off the cn axis, there must be n of that type of atom present. Inorganic chemistry page 2 main axis = c4 axis, which goes in and out of page (cl are off principle axis)
