First generation biofuels are commonly biodiesel or ethanol. Able to be burned in existing engines. Us is producing leader followed by brazil. Debate concerning international trade of biofuels that is relevant to the issue of social/environmental performance. Many have urged that any movement to further liberalize trade should simultaneously incorporate meaningful environmental and social safeguards. Biofuel certification: certifies that fuels are environmentally friendly. Almost all corn and soybeans is produced for mechanical means or feed for livestock. For first generation systems more energy into production than what we get out. Policy will play a major role in sustainable bioproduct development, but not the only role. Private voluntary standards and certifications will attempt to address the multiple trade-offs difficult for government policies to address. Very early in the process currently: criteria and implementation mechanisms are far from being determined (let alone standardized) with a handful of legitimate private governance initiatives.
