Resocialization
- Resocialization
- process of discarding former behavior patterns and accepting new ones as part
of transition in one’s life
- Total institution
- institution that regulates all aspects of person’s life under single authority
- Degradation ceremony
- attempt to remake the self by stripping away individual’s current identity and
putting a new one in place
Socialization
- lifelong social process in which people learn attitudes, values, behaviors appropriate for
members of particular culture
- provides transmission of culture from one generation to another and for the long-term
continuance of society
- occurs through human interaction
- shapes personality and sense of self
- self: distinct identity that sets us apart from others
