Overload: training effect occurs when physiological system is exercise at level beyond which normally accustomed w/increased intensity, duration, and/or frequency of exercise; over time system adapts to increased training load. Specificity: training effect is specific to: muscle fibers recruited during exercise, energy system involved (anaerobic vs aerobic, velocity of contraction, type of contraction (eccentric, concentric, isometric) Reversibility: gains are lost when exercise training ceases or overload is removed. Vo2 max (maximal oxygen uptake): measure of max capacity of body to transport/use o2 during exercise. Training to increase vo2max: involves dynamic activity of large muscle groups: 20-60 mins, 3x week, 50% vo2max. Expected increases in vo2max = average of 15-20: 2-3% in those w/high initial vo2max, requires exercise training intensity of >70% vo2max, up to 50% in those w/low initial vo2max, requires exercise training intensity of 40-50% vo2max.
