Coronary Heart Disease
In CHD the blood flow to the myocardium is compromised because of progressive narrowing or
sudden blocking of a coronary artery or arteries.
A heart attack happens when blood flow to the myocardium is impaired, either because of a
thrombus forms or because the artery goes into spasm.
The extent of the damage depends on the site of the obstruction; if flow is interrupted to a large
are of the myocardium, the attack is life-threatening because the heart can no longer function
as an effective pump.
CVD and Physical Activity
The disease endpoints that have been studied the most in relation to physical activity or fitness
are:
CHD
Stroke
Hypertension
CVD
CVD is the name given to a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD)
Hypertension (high blood pressure);
coronary heart disease (CHD)*;
cerebrovascular disease (stroke);
peripheral vascular disease ;
heart failure;
rheumatic heart disease;
cardiomyopathies (structural abnormalities).
Hypertension
Is the term given to abnormally high arterial blood pressure.

Is the term given to abnormally high arterial blood pressure. It increases the work of the heart, damages the arterial wall and increases the possibility that a small blood vessel in the brain will rupture, causing a stroke.
