EHS 240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Heat Therapy, Light Therapy, Muscle Spindle
Energy transfer
Conduction: direct contact
Convection: indirectly through another medium
Radition: transfer though space from one object to another
Conversion: though other forms of energy
Classifications
Electromagnetic: energy absorbed by the body.
Ex. Cryotherapy ( ice therapy)
Thermotherapy ( heat therapy)
Electrical stimulating currents and light therapy
Acoustic: energy in the form of vibration is absorbed though dense tissue to produce
heat and alter cell permeability. Ultrasound.
Mechanical: modalities are used to stretch, compress, manipulate soft tissue and/or
joint surfaces.
Ex. Traction, intermittent compression, and massage
Analgesic decrease muscle tone
Decrease muscle spindle depolarization increase axon reflex activity
Anesthetic analgesic
Ice vs heat
Ice Heat
Vascoconstriction vasodilation
Decreased blood flow increased blood flow
Decrease local metabolism increase local temperature
Decrease leuko and phagocytes increase leuko and phagocytes
