EHS 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Female Athlete Triad, B Vitamins, Case Fatality Rate
Document Summary
B vitamins: the recommended intake is not greater for athletes. Antioxidants: no evidence for higher need (to deal with the increase in free radical production during exercise) Iron: higher for athletes due to risk for sports anemia. Calcium: especially important for female athletes to prevent female athlete triad. Water is needed to eliminate heat during exercise, and to transport oxygen and nutrients to and waste products away from the muscles. The ability to dissipate the heat is affected by the hydration status of the exerciser and the environmental conditions. Failure to replace water lost can be critical. Failure to dissipate heat can raise the body temperature and jeopardize exercise performance and health. Heat stress causes depletion of blood volume due to fluid loss. Body heat is dissipated through evaporation of sweat (fluid) Signs: profuse sweating, headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, visual disturbances. Nausea, confusion, irritability, poor coordination, seizures, coma.
