Deviance - the recognized violation of cultural norms. Crime - the violation of a society"s formally enacted law one category of deviance. Chapter 6: social control and deviance: nothing is inherently deviant. American cultures: both norms and the way people define rule-breaking involve power, ex: joe paterno (penn state) protected jerry sandusky for 40 years despite evidence of abuse, people who have more power can get away with deviance. Social cohesion - the willingness of society to cooperate and work together. Mechanical solidarity - social cohesion based on common beliefs and experience homogeneity. Organic solidarity - social cohesion necessitated from interdependence. Common in more modern, urban, and heterogeneous societies. Less social control, but norms are still maintained because of mutual reliance. Labeling theory - the idea that deviance and conformity result not from what people do but how others respond. Degradation ceremony - formal rituals in which stigmas are attached by the wider community.
