Social cohesion - the willingness of society to cooperate and work together. Mechanical solidarity - social cohesion based on common beliefs and experience homogeneity. Organic solidarity - social cohesion necessitated from interdependence. Common in more modern, urban, and heterogeneous societies. Less social control, but norms are still maintained because of mutual reliance. Labeling theory - the idea that deviance and conformity result not from what people do but how others respond. Degradation ceremony - formal rituals in which stigmas are attached by the wider community.
