Kinship and group ties: motivation to help others to whom we are connected by blood, Instinct: motivation to help others is a natural tendency. Norm of reciprocity: motivation to help others so that they will become more likely to help. Altruism: motivation to help others even when it involves personal cost. Empathy-altruism hypothesis (daniel batson): when we take perspective other others and attempt to feel what they are going through we become more likely to help them for altruistic reasons. Negative-state relief model (cialdini): people have an innate drive to reduce negative moods, so we may help others to reduce negative feelings like guilt and discomfort that we experience when we see others suffering. Toi and batson (1982)- why are we helpful. Sought to test cialdini"s negative state relief model against batson"s empathy altruism hypothesis. Female students in intro psych class as participants.
