PSYCH 330 Lecture 2: Development
Document Summary
How do they work together in development. How much is what we are born with, and how much is what the environment creates/brings out. Maturation: unfolding biological changes that naturally occur over time as a result of genetics. Cognitive development: language, math skills, analytic ability. Reaction range: each person"s unique, genetically-determined response to the environment. Within the full range of possible environments, each person"s genetic predisposition will cause them to respond somewhat differently to that environment. We each have a unique genetic blueprint so we each respond differently even to the same environment. Reading- lots of reading, lots of books around. Suggest that many traits are at least partially genetic. At this point, large well-designed studies in last 5 years indicate that about 50% of general intelligence is attributable to genes. Environmental factors that have large impact include poverty, poor nutrition, and low stimulation environments.
