Helping others in need - help when costs are low. Situation force #2 - we help when costs are low. Conducted at a seminary (school for ministers). Students arrived to the study and were told that needed to walk to another building where they would deliver a brief speech. Some students told that they were late and should hurry to the building. Others were told that the study was itself behind schedule and they did not need to hurry. On the way to the building, students passed by a man slumped in a doorway, coughing. 60% of those who were not in a hurry helped. Situational force #3: we help more when we are the only one who can provide assistance. Participant arrives to the lab and is told that he will be working on a study in which they discuss (over the intercom system in the lab) college life. The other participants are in fact confederates. (actors)
