Document Summary
Unconditioned stimulus- stimulus that will naturally elicit a response. Conditioned stimulus- stimulus that will elicit a learned automatic response. Conditioned response- response that occurs in reaction to conditioned stimulus. A lot of your behavior is classically conditioned. You can use this knowledge to overcome irrational responses and replace them with more adaptive ones. Law of effect- the consequences that follow an action determine whether it will be repeated. Classical conditioning- automatic behaviors, responses are controlled by stimuli. Operant conditioning- voluntary, often highly skilled behaviors, responses are controlled by consequences. Desirable consequence increases the likelihood of a behavior. Positive reinforcement- increase behavior by adding something desirable. Negative reinforcement- increase behavior by removing something aversive. Fixed ratio- reinforcement after every number of responses. Variable ratio- reinforcement after an average of every number of responses. Fixed interval- reinforcement after every time period of time. Variable interval- reinforcement after an unpredictable amount of time.
