People say prison system is supposed to be a form of rehabilitation. Prisons were open by protestants to help people incorporate back into society. People are sent to prison so they can be incapacitated, they broke social norms and therefore they need to be removed from society and physically cannot break those social norms. Deterrence is another goal of prison system, if people know the consequences of actions they may not commit the crime. If you personally feel the violence of the state you may not do that thing anymore. Retribution because u enacted a harm on person and society there needs to be a form of payout, justice for the victim. Criminal justice system is intended to keep order. States punishments are objective whereas humans punishments are based on emotional responses. States are objective and law is objective.
