Document Summary

Function of the knee: why is it so complex, movement, support, mobility vs. Stability: how much movement someone has, stabilization of the joint, muscular actions. Anatomy of the knee: structures to be familiar with, patella knee cap. Tibia shin bone; weight-bearing bone: collateral ligaments ligaments on either side of the knee, acl anterior cruciate ligament. Connects to the back (posterior side) of the femur and to the front (anterior side) of the tibia: meniscus shock absorbing pad - is hard to repair because it is the most involved. Function of the knee: but: femur is round at the end and the tibia is flat, provides little stability, stability of the joint is dependent on the ligaments, tendons and muscles around it. Testing for acl injury: pivot shift, patient"s knee flexed, attempt to twist the lower leg. If there is damage to the acl, this will be very painful.
