Kings unable to defend their lands, lands of their nobles. Nobles had to find a way to defend their own lands. Not elaborate structures; built of wood, used as place of shelter in case of attack. Nobles needed trained soldiers to defend castles. Vassals had duties to perform for the lord. Training began at age 7 as a page. Squires at age 15, trained by other knights. Freeman- skilled, paid rent, could leave manor as they wished. Lords protect vassals, vassal give service to lords. Order of power: king, powerful nobles, lesser nobles (knights), serfs and freemen. Toubadours: minstrels, bards, jongleurs, trouveres, professional storyteller. Alienor d"aquitaine: one of wealthiest and most popular women in western europe during high middle ages.
