COMM 288 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Transsexual, Erving Goffman
Document Summary
Related gender to architecture--we are using our culture constantly to remind people of what gender is (ex. A church, we wouldn"t know what a church is without knowing the context of our knowledge on certain means of architecture) Goffman argues that we participate in displays using our bodies that portray to others how we want to be seen to the rest of society. We want to be recognized in a particular way. When we are communicating with one another, we must communicate with them to show them what we mean to convey. In different cultures, when people do this, we develop short-handed ways of doing this. In relation to gender, this means that people develop cues (or codes). Sex gender gender characteristics (masculine, feminine) Gender is the first category after determining the sex because that"s what our society has made us out to assume. Biology is always connected to culture/societal expectations.
