Metalinguistic skills: words can be played with. Rhinoceros, hippopotamus big words for big animals. Mosquito, dragonfly big words for tiny insects: rhyming at 2-3 years, tornadoes are whirling masses of red air. Tornadoes sounds like tomatoes : beagles are kinds of dogs that can fly. Why: younger children (preschoolers) cannot tell the difference between the word and the object". Language content: vocabulary growth, definitions become more dictionary-like.
