Document Summary

Yeast, like bacteria, can be grown on a petri dish using a growth medium. Permissive temperature where the organism flourishes. Restrictive temperature where the organism stops functioning. Protein import into the er as a model. Trafficking between compartments and out of the cell. Another is compartments as the cell got bigger its surface area diminishes so adding compartments helps deal with this. Compartments the compartmentalization has advantages in efficiency and specialization, and defense. Do not memorize all of these names. It is efficient to translate protein one place then move them. Proteins need to get into the membrane in the cell. Most er proteins are targeted there during translation. The proteins have a signal sequence, which is recognized by a soluble protein that then helps to take it to the er. The signal sequence is cleaved once the protein enters the er. Signal sequence tells the protein where to go.
