Document Summary

Bio151 lecture 19 metabolism, energetics, and glycolysis. Metabolism is the totality of the chemical reactions in an organism. Some are catabolic and break down molecules, often for energy. Some are anabolic and build up structures. The first law of thermodynamics is that energy is neither created or destroyed it is transformed. The second law is that every energy transfer increases disorder, the entropy of the system. In biological terms this means that every transduction of energy results in a loss of heat to the system. Cells must transduce energy (1st law) to maintain order. These are not 100% efficient and heat gets lost to environment, creating more disorder (2nd law). Chemical reactions on in the energy of the it is essentially the the products you change have. For the chemical reactions that go the cell to occur they must increase system"s disorder.
