The word concussion" comes from the latin word concussus, which means action from striking together. It is a relatively mild traumatic brain injury (tbi). It is relatively common, with about 3. 8 million cases per year in the united states of the america. Only 20% of actual concussions come from sports-related injuries. It is caused by the rapid acceleration / deceleration of the brain. Incredibly complex: seat of intelligence and consciousness, forms and holds memory, directs movement, contains 100 billion neurons, 100 trillion connections, texture and consistency of jello, rather delicate. What normally protects the brain from injury: bones and skull, membranes, fluid. Signs and symptoms of concussions: the fencing response you go out (fall down) and your hands go up , found in two-thirds of head impacts followed by unconsciousness. Effects of a concussion: difficulties thinking or remembering, difficulties interpreting and remembering new information, headaches and migraines.
