Schools of thought: criminologists who view crime as a function of social conflict and economic rivalry are aligned with a number of schools of thought referred to as Forerunners of conflict theory: marx and engels-capitalism and crime. Marx and engels saw the problem in economic terms and denounced the division of labor as the unjust exploitation of one social class by another. Conflict was inherent in the nature of social arrangements under capitalism because of the vast differences in interests and power created under it. All history has been a history of class struggles between dominated classes at various stages of social development. Orthodox criminology: we measure social class by an individual(cid:438)s income. Marxist criminology: social class is more than your income; it is a set of relationships between people (e. g. one(cid:438)s location in the relations of production.
