Document Summary
By the (cid:437)60s, biology had lost much of it influence in criminological theory. By the mid (cid:437)70s & (cid:437)80s, interest emerged in newer biological approaches to criminality. 1986 study linking violent criminal acts to head trauma (tbi: traumatic brain injuries) Most biosocial criminologists reject the idea that biology translates into a predestined date and instead suggests that genetic traits interact with the environment to shape human behavior. Traces various forms of deviant behavior to the possibility of head injury. Fishbein (2003) argues that hpa (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) impairment is high among (cid:440)intractable(cid:441) offenders. Hpa impairment associated with chronic or severe stress. Depletes cortisol, which leads to depression, inability to regulate emotion. Recent biochemical theories have focused on sex hormones and neurotransmitters. Sex hormone theory: possible connection between testosterone and aggression. Problem with this theory is that testosterone is also created by aggression, so there is not a simple causal relationship.
