Document Summary
Gene expression: the process by which proteins are made from the instructions encoded in. Cardiovascular disease: any abnormal condition characterized by dysfunction of the heart and blood vessels. It includes atherosclerosis, cerebrovascular disease, and hypertension. Atherosclerosis: a type of "hardening of the arteries" in which cholesterol and other substances in the blood build up in the walls of the arteries. As the process continues, the arteries to the heart can narrow, cutting down the flow of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the heart. Plaque: a buildup of substances that circulate in the blood (ex calcium, fat, cholesterol, cellular waste, fibrin) on a blood vessel wall, making it vulnerable to blockage from blood clots. Hypertension: persistent blood pressure; when resting blood pressure persistently exceeds. 140 mm hg systolic or 90 mm hg diastolic. Usually has no specific symptoms or early warning signs and appears as no threat. Cancer: a term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control.
