27 views2 pages

Document Summary

The first principle of universal design is equitable use. This means that the design must be available to people with different abilities. It must not be exclude any individual from using it. A real world example of how it can be applied to aging are. Some of the home modifications discussed in the book chapter are the adjustable sink system, pull down adjustable shelves, a shower space without a bathtub, grab bars near the toilet seats and the shower. All these are ways that make it easy for the elderly to carry out their daily route. The one that i found most useful was the grab bars near the toilet seats. This allows the elderly to do their business without getting help from someone else. On an average a person has to use the bathroom more times than they need to take a shower.
