Document Summary

Stats 250: introduction to statistics - lecture 4: random variables. A number assigned to each outcome of a random circumstance, or, equivalently, a random variable assigns a number to each unit in a population. Overall condition of a car (1 = good, 2 = very good, 3 = Any value in an interval or collection of intervals. Random variables are denoted by capital letters (x, y, z); outcomes of random variables are represented with small letters (x, y, z) For example, the probability that a random variable takes on the value of. 2 would be expressed as p(x = 2) A model showing the possible values for that particular random variable and how often those values are expected to occur (i. e. their probabilities) Can be expressed as a function, table, picture, depending on the type of variable it is. Arises in situations where you are counting the number of successes that occur in a sample.
