Introduction: diagnosis are new, mid-late 1800"s (victorian era, diagnosis did not have the contemporary import that they do today, science of sex is new, mid-late 1800"s, classic era - when sexology was born. Really looks at the achievements of these categories. They are systematically related and there are different ways of doing so. The central role of diagnosis in medicine is new. Context: mid-late 1800s, western europe, context & currents, emergence of positivism (science: reason + empiricism, evolutionism, slow-gradual change, movement towards perfection, classificatory mood.
