Document Summary
Organization - a particular social entity that brings people together, arranges their behaviors, and is planned and set up to accomplish a collective goal in a specific time and place. Organizations are often concrete manifestations of a more general social institution. Common way of patterning social relationships - hierarchy (principal, counselors, teachers, students); homeschool, charter, boarding, public, private, religious, single-sex. Social purpose - educate, preparation for real world, common courtesy, interaction, cooperation, cultural/social capital, qualifications rules/roles/rituals/practices/expectations - do homework (deadlines), learn, take tests, asking for permission, listen to authority, take care of child. Still separate, still unequal: america"s educational apartheid - kozol; class+race. Parents" socioeconomic class alters your years of learning. Making it by faking it: working-class students in an elite academic environment - Granfield: feeling out of place - profound sense of undesired stigma/difference, faking it - adopt new dress code/behaviors, different interpersonal skills, ambivalence - identity conflicts; pulling away from original identity.
