SLAVIC 290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Yugoslav Black Wave, Utopia, Group Psychotherapy
Document Summary
Yugoslavia government (titos) - created a third way for socialist countries and he did not want to get involved with the cold war and remain neutral as a socialist country, but open to the west, diplomatically, economically, etc. Conducted purges throughout his regime that were aimed at his political opponents from 1948-1956. However, this ended up changing later on. Killed people, but not to the extent that stalin did. Economy was a lot better than other countries in eastern europe. He borrowed a lot of money from the west in the 60s and 70s to prop up the economy and have a high standard of living. When it collapses in the 80s it creates a lot of political tension. Politicians were drumming up ethnic tensions that created the war. In the 1960s, they started a liberal phase where they allowed people make what they want to make as long as it wasnt critical of the government.
